What's My Body Shapeshape wizard

Pear (Triangle) Body Shape

Hips noticeably wider than bust or shoulders, with a defined waist in between.

A pear reading means hips are the widest measurement by a real margin, the waist is clearly smaller than both bust and hips, and the difference between hips and the upper body clears this site's 5% threshold. Also see apple for the shape defined by an undefined waist instead.

How it's calculated

This site calls it pear when hips are at least 5% larger than bust/shoulders, with a waist smaller than both. The spoon variant adds the high-hip shelf check above. The hourglass test runs first, so a set of measurements that sits exactly on this threshold with a deep waist reads as hourglass rather than pear.

Hips are 14.3% larger than bust/shoulders, at or over the 5% pear threshold, with a defined waist.

Dressing guide

  • Draw the eye up. Boat necks, statement collars, structured shoulders, and detail on tops balance the wider base.
  • A-line and bootcut over skinny. Bottoms that skim rather than cling through the hip avoid emphasizing the widest point.
  • Darker bottoms, lighter or patterned tops is a real, boring, reliable proportion trick -- color and pattern draw attention on their own.
  • Define the waist without over-cinching the hip. A belt at the natural waist works; one that sits low pulls focus to the hip line instead.

A training note

Hip and thigh training (squats, hip thrusts, lateral work) tends to add to the widest measurement here, which can sharpen a pear read further. Upper-body and shoulder training moves the other side of the ratio. Neither is "correcting" anything -- shape isn't a problem to fix, just a proportion to dress for.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between pear and spoon?

Both have hips notably larger than bust -- this site's threshold is 5% -- but spoon adds a second condition: the high hip measurement (2-3 inches below the natural waist) is at least 7% smaller than the full hip, creating a visible "shelf." Skip the high hip field in the wizard and you'll only ever get pear, never spoon.

Is pear the same as triangle?

Same shape, two common names. Some guides call it pear, others triangle (point at the shoulders, wide at the base) -- this site uses them interchangeably for the female five-shape system.

Why does the wizard ask about shoulders here?

Shoulders can be wider than bust on some builds. The classifier uses whichever of bust or shoulders is larger for the 'upper body' side of the comparison, so a broad-shouldered pear still reads correctly instead of skewing toward inverted triangle.
